Euronav, the owner of a modern fleet of oil tankers supplying the Ultramar refinery in the port of Québec, has earned the esteem and respect of the marine community for its dynamism and highly developed sense of responsibility towards its clients, personnel and protection of the environment.

With a view to constantly improving its procedures, Euronav has sought the expertise of the Maritime Simulation and Resource Centre (MSRC) of the Corporation of Lower St. Lawrence Pilots (CLSLP) to provide its captains and senior officers with training designed to hone their skills in navigating the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River. The program, built around the Centre's navigation simulators, is designed to consolidate the knowledge already held by the navigation crew and to develop effective work methods. It will also reinforce established procedures and coordination with marine pilots.

In order to fulfil this mandate, the MSRC team developed an entirely new geographic database for the Gulf of St. Lawrence and integrated it in its simulation system, one of the most up-to-date in the world. It also programmed a ship model similar in every detail to the Euronav vessels plying Canada's waterways. Finally, a training program was developed to integrate the analysis of factors that may contribute to accidents, communications between bridge crew members and pilots, and ways of maximizing the effectiveness and efficiency of the navigation crew in light of the particularly severe conditions to be encountered on the St. Lawrence River.

The first training session was offered in November 2011 to a group composed of officers from Canada and Greece by Captain Christian Ouellet, a MSRC instructor, and Captain Benoît Blanchette, a Grade A pilot specializing in the navigation of the St. Lawrence River between Les Escoumins and Québec City. Captain Blanchette is also a docking pilot for the port of Québec.

Euronav is a market leader in the transportation and storage of crude oil and petroleum products. Euronav owns and manages a fleet of European flag vessels. The company, incorporated in Belgium, is headquartered in Antwerp. Euronav employs over 1500 people worldwide onshore and offshore and has offices throughout Europe and Asia. Euronav is listed on NYSE Euronext Brussels under the symbol EURN.

The Maritime Simulation and Resource Centre (MSRC) specializes in marine training and is located in Québec City, Canada. To provide its training, the MSRC has equipped itself with the most modern navigation and tug simulators in Canada. Besides being used for special training in ship-handling, the simulation systems are used for other purposes, such as maritime infrastructure development, navigation safety and ship-handling in difficult conditions.
